Download of print file of the drawing of the Leiden Academy at the Rapenburg.

Original minimalistic pencil drawing of Academy building of the Leiden University. The academy was build in 1516 (as a chapel) and is the oldest building and the heart of the university. In the front there are two arches of the Nonnenbrug (Nuns’ Bridge).

In 1516 the Academy building was build as a chapel for the monastery on the Rapenburg. The interior of the chapel was destroyed during the beeldenstorm (iconoclasm) in 1566. The building itself was confiscated in 1574 after ‘Leidens ontzet’ (relief of the Spanish siege). Since 1581 the building is in use by the university.

Every year, for more than four ages, starting from the Academy building the professors will walk over the Nonnenbrug to the St. Peters church. Each year at the start of the academic year in september and at the ‘dies natalis’ (founding date) of the university (February 8th).
